The State Agency Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) is the largest public research institution in Spain and the third largest in Europe. Its primary objective is to develop and promote research for the advancement of scientific and technological progress, and it is open to collaboration with both Spanish and foreign entities. The CSIC plays a central role in scientific and technological policy, covering everything from basic research to knowledge transfer to the productive sector. Its centers and institutes are spread across all autonomous communities, with 121 research institutes and 3 national centers. Since March 2021, CSIC has been recognized with the “HR Excellence in Research Award” excellence badge. It leads scientific production in Spain, employing over 15,000 people who contribute to an average of 13,000 publications annually in prestigious scientific journals. Furthermore, the CSIC manages a significant set of infrastructures, including the most comprehensive and extensive network of specialized libraries, and operates joint research units.

The Centro de Edafología y Biología Aplicada del Segura (CEBAS) is a CSIC Research Institute located in Murcia. It is a multidisciplinary center conducting research in three main scientific and technical areas: Agricultural Sciences and Food Science and Technology. Situated in an agricultural region with a semi-arid climate and limited water resources, it promotes research aimed at the development of quality agriculture and technological treatments that enable the production of healthy, safe, and attractive plant-based foods for consumers, particularly in areas with fragile resources, while respecting soil and water conservation. The CEBAS-CSIC Technology Transfer Office promotes, coordinates, and manages the relationships between CEBAS-CSIC and companies. CEBAS-CSIC facilities are located on the Espinardo University Campus, near the city of Murcia.

Avícola El Charcón is a turkey farm located in El Burgo de Osma, in the province of Soria, with a flock of 55,000 turkeys. The facility consists of 4 fattening sheds, equipped with propane gas heating. Currently, the farm manages waste (manure) through a regular collection system.

Collaborating members

The University of Vigo (UVigo), through the Energy Technology Group (GTE), acts as a subcontracted member. GTE is one of the largest and most active research groups within the entire Galician university system. Currently, it has more than 30 members, of which 14 are permanent professors at the University of Vigo, with the remaining members consisting of doctoral students and contracted staff funded by research projects. It has been recognized as a Competitive Reference Group by the Xunta de Galicia since the creation of this distinction and has received numerous awards for its activities. Its ability to secure funding through competitive calls (both national and international) and research contracts with industry exceeds 1M€/year.

The primary focus of the GTE research group is on research in the field of energy efficiency and thermal engineering, with biomass combustion being one of its main lines of research. The group has proven experience in both experimentation and simulation. Over the past 20 years, it has been intensively studying biomass combustion in fixed bed systems through publicly funded research projects as well as providing services to industry.
